After adding Shansaan to BA and buying four, I finally drank the first copy three weeks later. It was worth the wait. I started it to breakup the sameness of lunch and finished it with pre-prepared dinner of quiche. Shansaan seems table versatile as saisons should be and improved my modest meals. Hence, my Huge Overall Hugs are explained further below.
What Shansaan lacks in the traditional saison's protein swirls, it makes up for with its pretty rose' color. Smells are mostly the spices and the citrus melange. Tastes are well balanced. Everything seems to work together despite of the strong cranberries and citrus presence. Refreshing. Medium-mouthed.
While certainly refreshing as spring starts to round into summer, Shansaan certainly could be released again for winter Solstice with its spices and cranberries. For those holidays, maybe less citrus and some amber malts.
OCB may well be the most diversified and prolific saison maker in the U.S. and, given that large market, the world. With 34 active saisons on BA, I've had 31 and I am devoted to several as table go-tos. While many micros may have a core standard saison malt bill that other recipes flow from, OCB seems to have several cores and Shansaan seems to be one more depending on how much dextrin went in.
I will look forward to Shansaan all summer and four months from then.
5/24/24 Started another copy at lunch and finished it at dinner. This is a pretty good routine for a tart saison; I maximize its flexibility and I don't get overwhelmed by the tart.
