Lost in Maine is a mix between a beer and a cider. The style has very loose guidelines as to the fermentation process as well as the blend. Although cider beer hybrids have been around for thousands of years, it was popularized and given the name “Graf”, or “Graff” by Maine native Stephen King in his Dark Towers series in the 1980’s. Our example is a marriage parfait of farmhouse beer and farmhouse cider, made using a blend of about 70% beer to 30% apple juice hand selected and pressed at Ricker Hill Orchards in Turner, Maine. Fermented with a Belgian yeast strain that pushes phenolic and fruity characteristics to pair well with the juice, the blend comes out with notes of apple-pear turnover and allspice. Mostly dry with a touch of sweetness on the back end.

Released 2/5/25; drank 3/4/25 @ the Yarchives.
Cloudy pale yellow appearance.
A rough pour yielded a nice, noisy bright white head; strong lacing remained.
Fresh apple, faint tart lemon & faint clove notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Applesauce, mild tart lemon & faint clove flavors.
A nice, balanced meeting of beer & cider; I'd have another.

One is not enough for me to either understand or be satisfied enough by this beer/cider.
I certainly like the concept as I drink too little cider and too much beer.
Lost In Maine Looks like a good saison with a less active foam (probably suppressed by the 30% cider.) The yeast (reminds me of Apex) works the rest of the brew well. For Smells, I get the apple and the active fruity malt in one telling snort. It tells me that the attack is apple, the mid-palate is balanced and the finish will largely be dry. Hard to do when 30% is a pretty sweet fruit. Medium-mouthed. Refreshing. I want another one side-by-side with Apex. And then I'll expand this review.
