Another Burial Brewing beer and so far they have been pretty good. The labels on these beers are eerily creepy but make a statement. Got this beer from Mike, thank you very much for sending me this beer. I am not the biggest fan of black ales, but I will drink them. The beer is 45 degree and served in a tulip glass. The beer has a huge three finger light tan head. The head is creamy and airy with good retention. The head slowly dissipates and leaves some lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 35 dark brown nearly black and is opaque.
I smell the hops ( pine, grapefruit, resin, tropical and floral), then dark roasted malts, char, bready, yeasty, chocolate, earthy, and wood in the aromas.
A soft malty complex but firm backbone. The flavors are pine grapefruit, resin, tropical, dark roasted malts, char, bready, yeasty, and earthy.
The mouthfeel of the beer is astringent and dry.
The body of the beer is medium, medium carbonation, and a long finish.
I am surprised by this beer it has given me hope in black ales. The beer has a pleasant subtle char note. The balance of the beer is phenomenal. It is a tasty beer. The beer is DIPA it does not drink like that style.

Appearance - Pour black with thick tan soapy head great lacing all around the glass.
Aroma - Picking up some light hops little bit of malt some orange and grapefruit as well.
Taste - Really great flavors well balanced hop and malts flavors with a touch of orange peel bitterness.
Feel - Medium bodied well carbonated with just a hint of a dry finish.
Overall - This might be the best back IPA I have had great flavors.

This is likely the first black IPA I've had that I didn't eventually drain pour. I'm not saying the style doesn't appeal to me - it's just... well, maybe the style doesn't appeal to me.
That being said, Whence We Came has a surprising softness to it that I'd expect to find in a NE IPA, not in a black IPA. It also boasts an interesting maltiness to it. It's a complex beer, and quite a good one. Burial - still winning at beer.
