Collaboration with Halfway Crooks Beer

To those who shed their skin. And those who journey beneath. A way to be. To live beyond the surface of things. A classic rendition of a seasonal treasure trove, made to endure the lull before the next harvest. A collaborative concept with our friends at Halfway Crooks. This lagerbier is made with Epiphany Craft Malt Pilsners, Vienna and Munich malts, mashed with a healthy decoction. We then whole cone hopped the beer in our whirlpool with Hersbrucker, before sending it to our cellar for a slow ferment and extended lagering. Smooth sipping, everlasting flavors. Abundant satisfaction.

A: Pours a clear medium to dark amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate dark golden yellow + dark burnt orange + light ruby red + honey colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy beige head that reduces to a medium sized patch of thin film covering approximately 20% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of bready + toasted + caramel + toffee malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel + toffee sweetness. Moderate aromas of lager yeast. Light to moderate aromas of floral + slightly fruity/cherry hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of bready + toasted + caramel + toffee malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel + toffee sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of lager yeast. Finally there are light to moderate flavors of floral + slightly fruity/cherry hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which fades away pretty quickly leaving a relatively clean finish.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Relatively clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasantly lightly crisp + clean mouthfeel. Very enjoyable malt profile with light amounts of complexity and great floral hop presence.

On tap in a pint glass.

See through dark amber color. 1-plus F white cap, soap suds lacing.

German malt and hops, caramel, floral, light sweetness, a bit toasty.

Caramel toasted malt, herbs and floral flavors.

Medium bodied as lagers go. Toasted malt and mild hop balance. Nice finish that touches dry.

Marzen in April on an NC venture? Yup, good and fresh.

Can dated 3/2/23. Seidel.

A: pours a nearly completely clear amber-orange with one finger that recedes quickly. No lacing.

S: a little mild sweet maltiness, hints of cherry, and a little butter toffee. Munich malt sweetness is more marked as it warms.

T: arrives moderately sweet, thoroughly malty mid-palate, a little toasty melanoidins, but not much. Definitely a malty, sweet beer, but never goes full-on syrupy; stays light, crisp, and quaffable. Finishes with a touch of floral noble hops, ends clean with the faintest hint of sweetness.

M: lighter side of midweight; quite attenuated, with moderate carbonation.

O: I’ve been to Asheville three times, and tried two other Burial beers that I enjoyed. I visited their taproom, and of all the beers I tasted, this was my favorite. Having it at home now, it is a touch lighter than I recall. A bit light on the roastiness and maltiness for a Marzen; but that is fine by me, as the maltier examples of that style can be difficult to drink. This is far darker than a Wiesn-style Okto, and kind of light in taste and profile for a traditional Marzen. But as a springtime amber lager, it is absolutely perfect. Malty, sweet, clean. Would pair well with a wide variety of foods.
