We got together with Edmund's Oast to devise this take on the Northwest Barleywine, in a more modern gown. This is a combination of more modern full-bodied strong ales, with the bountiful hop-driven barleywines that lured us to beer back in Seattle. This beer started as a 6-hour boiled barley base, before standing in a mash tun full of whole-cone Chinook and Citra hops. We then aged the beer in steel for a month, before blending with a small portion of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine and bottling to age in glass for both a young version and an old version. We always said that the best barleywine was made of hoppy imperial IPA aged for a year.

Picked up a single 500 ml bottle from the Asheville South Slope location on 6-20-25 for $23.00. Bottled spring 2025; consumed 9-4-25.

Beer poured garnet brown with a nice off white head with the original pour.

Nose is very nice as the citrus hops dominate along with the caramel. Getting a touch of vanilla.

Taste is a caramel driven malt baseline that yields notes of toffee and brown sugar. Hopping brings a bright citrusy note and while the barrel is not perceptible it is balancing the copious amounts of hops.

Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied and very soft and smooth with each sip.

Overall, have to say this is a superb job of blending the older barreled version of this with the fresh vintage. Wonderful!

Look - Pours a brown color with a massive head that sticks around a while. Looks nice!

Smell - A very strange and unusual smell - Grapefruit, pine, dates, caramel, and bourbon,

Taste - Taste is better than expected. Malt, caramel, dates, with only very light notes of hops and bourbon.

Feel - This went down SO easy. The 11.5%ABV is PERFECT, it's VERY smooth, and I can't say enough about the feel.

Overall - This barleywine has a very odd smell that I don't care for, but to me the taste and especially the mouthfeel are very nice.

T - The taste is caramel, toffee, raisins, dates, orange peel and some light piney hops.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a nice soft finish.

O - Really solid American barleywine.
