Drank from a 1 pint bottle purchased on Tavour
Served in a tulip
The beer poured an oily and dense, complete pitch black hue. Even with a fairly aggressive pour, there was no head but merely swirls of froth atop the liquid. The swirls eventually transformed into a thin collar. After every sip, a blanket of spotty lacing trickled down the sides of the glass.
The aroma was really unique and enjoyable. Rich, sweet, caramel malts dominated. Toffee and boozy bourbon notes came through strong as well. Lots of fresh, high quality vanilla bean too. Fragrant coconut notes were also quite prominent. Candied lime zest was noticeable as well and worked really well to cut through all the rich, sweet booziness. Dark chocolate was also detectable.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose and equally impressive. Rich malty notes led things off. Nice melding of sweet caramel malts and some roasted malt character. Fresh coconut also came through strong. Boozy bourbon notes appeared as the liquid moved along the palate. Nice vanilla bean presence in the center. Some zesty lime notes were apparent on the back end and carried into the finish. Bit of dark chocolate too. More lingering boozy/bourbon heat after the swallow, along with a bit of roastiness.
The mouthfeel was also outstanding. Full bodied for the style. Oily and dense of the palate. The liquid contained a super fine, moderate effervescence that fluffed up beautifully. For a 15% ABV beer, the alcohol heat was extremely well hidden.
The rather unique list of adjuncts in this beer made me skeptical of the end product, but it somehow worked amazingly well (despite some being completely undetectable). Kudos to Burial Beer and The Eighth State for taking a risk with this collaboration. Your efforts definitely paid off.
