Barrel Aged Golden Sour Ale with Apricots, Orange Zest, and Sea Salt
There's undeniable beauty in the slow surrender. A quiet grace enveloped in a fleeting glow. The night will take what's left. This very limited Golden Sour Ale was originally intended for our Burnpile 2024 Ticket Holders. Over 1800lbs of fresh apricots from California were pitted and conditioned on barrel-aged golden sour. After being inoculated with our house sour culture, fresh orange zest and pink Himalayan sea salt were added to the blend for notes of tart plum skins, orange tang, and fresh citrus blossoms. A playful creation to delight your inner child.

500ml bottle that had been in the cellar since Christmas 2024 poured into a Treehouse Teku glass
Appearance: Wow that's light! It looks like a carbonated chardonnay. Light carbonation. This really looks more like wine than beer. Looks pretty thin
Aroma: This actually smells like a sweet white wine. If I didn't pour this myself and were blindfolded, I'd assume it was wine. I have no idea what to expect from this.
Taste: The taste is peculiar. Lightly tart, nothing too bad. It's the salt, that's what the odd thing was. I'm not sure that I necessarily get the apricots for how much they were hyped up. I didn't realize that this was going to just sort of be a gose. The barrel notes aren't really prominent either. I don't think I would have picked up on that had it not been on the label.
Mouthfeel: Pretty good, actually. For the low ABV it doesn't come across as too thin. The mouthfeel is pretty balanced. I'm enjoying it.
Overall: This is an interesting one. I don't dislike it, but this may be my least favorite offering that I've had from Burial. I'd definitely drink this again if it were offered to me, but I doubt it would be worth buying. For a barrel aged beer this just comes across as a better than average gose. The barrel notes and fruit are lost on me. The sea salt and orange zest are prominent. This is an enjoyable and refreshing beverage, but they could just skip the barrel aging and toss this in a 12oz can. I feel like this is blasphemy to say, but it's how I feel. In general Burial beers blow me away. This one was, alright/pretty good.
Edit: Before posting I had looked at my empty glass from the first pour, looked over the review and said to myself, "Yeah, that's it. What else is there to say? I think that covers it." Posted, then poured the rest of the bottle for the second pour. The look is completely different. VERY opaque. This now looks like a hazy NE IPA. The aroma sort of bursts with apricots. Still not necessarily getting the barrel. The sour fruit character comes through a lot more on the taste. The mouthfeel, which I had already liked, is even better now/fuller. The salt is still prominent, the barrel is still lacking, but everything else has been improved. Updating the Smell, Taste and Overall from 3.75 each to 4 each. Very interesting.

500 ml bottle split with a friend. Pours a glowing hazy yellow/orange color with a pale yellow head. Aroma is kind of weird - a strong green mango smell, very grassy. It doesn't come through much in the flavor, thankfully. Lots of apricot, nice sour blonde base with oak and tannins. Solid but would be much better without the underripe green aroma.
