This isn't your average sour beer! We start with a rye saison that blends the flavours of clove and the spiciness of rye. Then we put it to bed in a red wine barrel and let our special sour blend work its magic for several months. The result is a wonderfully tart and spicy package that will titillate the senses!

Not retired! On tap in Toronto July 2017; hazy mid amber with a 1/2 inch head that lasted and laced well. Aromas of leather, sour cherry, field berries. Wonderfully complex flavours. They describe this as a Rye Saison soured in red wine barrels and it pretty much lives up to what you'd expect. Full in the mouth but very drinkable. Next please!

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery last month; served barely chilled. Bit of a geyser when I popped the cap, but nothing too messy.
This beer pours a murky amber colour, with two fingers of soapy, bone white-coloured foam situated on top. It fizzles off within a matter of minutes, depositing several swathes of lace as it shrinks down to a thin, creamy cap and frothy collar. I am detecting a respectable dosage of tart Brett funk and vinegar on the nose, with accompanying notes of rye bread, lemon peel, apple and vinous red grape skin, as well as the slightest hints of caramelized sugar and vanilla.
Not bad; unlike some of the other FR barrel-aged soured beers I've had, both the Brett/sourness and the barrel itself contribute fairly prominently to the flavour profile. It has a decidedly tart, acidic bent to it, with notes of red grape and vinegar funk dominating the subtle backbone of grainy, bready rye malts. Hints of lemon, raspberry and orchard fruit are noticeable by mid-sip, followed by a long finish that includes nuances of oak and vanilla obscured by the significant acidity. Red grape skin tannins, rye and clove spice at the end, with a tart aftertaste that lingers on the palate only briefly. Medium in body, with light carbonation levels that result in a soft, gently foamy sort of mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.93, a B+. Forked River's Grumpy Peasant isn't perfect, but by Ontario-brewed sour standards (is that a thing yet?), I'd still say they've done a fine job. As an unrepentant rye addict, I do feel that the grain's presence could stand to be amped up a bit - because the sourness and (to a lesser extent) the fruity wine barrel flavours seem to totally obliterate the flavours of the base beer itself. Recommended as worth a try, though I'd probably pick Hansel & Brett'el or Myarsis over this one.
