473 mL can from the brewery; dated Nov 30 2017 and served well chilled.
Pours very dark brown with deep crimson highlights, topped with a one inch crown of foamy, buff-coloured head. It dissipates almost completely within five minutes' time, with only a narrow collar and a few splashes of seafoam lace surviving. Smells of ashy, burnt grains and roasted malts, with faint suggestions of coffee grounds, nuts, and a vegetal pea-like scent.
A nice little dark lager with a light, balanced flavour profile. Roasted grains seem to be the dominant player on the field, as I'm getting lots of toasted bread with some nutty qualities, as well as some coffee ground bitterness towards the back end. Hints of grassy, herbal hops and a slight ash-like note precede the bone dry finish and aftertaste, which leave the palate refreshed, rebooted and ready for a follow-up sip. Light-bodied, with moderately high carbonation that continuously prods the surface of the tongue, giving this dark lager a crisp and rather refreshing mouthfeel. Extraordinarily easy to knock back - I'd consider it a session lager, even at 5.2%.
Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. Forked River's Liquid Schwartz probably won't blow your mind, but if you're a dark lager lover who lives in the vicinity of the London metro area then you'll want to seek it out nonetheless. I am really digging its roasty qualities, as well as its crisp, clean, lightly hopped finish, which is reminiscent of a pilsener. This is a beer that I could drink pint after pint of... and given the dearth of quality schwarzbiers and dark lagers at the LCBO these days, I expect I'll be stocking up the next time I drop by the brewery.
