Notes: Pumpkin Saison. De Ogen or "The Eyes" are spirits that haunt the Sonian Forest in Belgium where local legend recounts a series of gruesome murders and witnesses report small, shadowy figures staring at them through a dense fog. Brewed with pumpkin and mildly spiced, we finish De Ogen with a free-rise fermentation using "Sainsonstein's Monster" from Chicago's Omega Yeast Labs. Feel that? The Eyes are watching you.

Hard to rate pumpkin beers because they vary so widely. This one is especially nice since it clearly announces something of a base style (farmhouse). So, I know what I can expect, maybe.

Look = 5
Nice, dark orange with some cloudiness that I'd expect in a "farmhouse" or saison style. Fine, champagne-like bubbles & nice creamy-looking head

Spices come through, but are balanced nicely by some Belgian funk. The two seem to compliment each other very well. I can't tell where the esthers stop and the spices start. nicely done!

Taste= 4.25
Great base beer - some tartness (some wheat in the base? maybe from the yeast?). Good breadiness and then spices. Spices fade between sips, so this isn't your typical "liquid pumpkin pie" beer,

Medium-full. Definitely some body-building grains in this one. Carb is fairly high and inline with a farmhouse or saison.

Overall: 4.75
Great beer. I'm not one to seek out spiced beers, but this one is fantastic. Very well balanced and pleasant to drink. It's much more subtle than every other pumpkin beer I've ever had. I"ll definitely have this one again!

I’m usually skeptical of pumpkin beers, finding them overly sweet and over-spiced. Ten Ninety has made me a believer. De Ogen is a balanced farmhouse saison with the right touch of spices and a notable pumpkin flavor. Nice carbonation and color.

Just had the latest release and it's as good as I remembered. Deep orange color with nice hints of pumpkin and spice on the nose. This beer isn't over spiced like some pumpkin beers. The saison yeast they use in this beer really adds depth and character that put this beer head and shoulders above other pumpkin ales. This is a go to beer for the fall and I will be buying extra to cellar!

Appearance - 4.25/5
Deep orange with a hint of red. A small amount of head. Fairly clear. A lot of carbonation can be seen. I love the color, it's brilliant

Smell - 3.75/5
Slight tartness, saison breadiness and spiciness.

Taste - 4.25/5
Very bready and saison-like. Hints of pumpkin and fall spices. I like that the fall taste is detectable, but is not the major aspect of this beer. Too often fall beers are overpowered with fall flavors. This tastes like it would be a good saison, even without the fall flavors.

Mouthfeel - 4.25/5
Medium to full bodied. Fairly crisp. Carbonation is medium-high in intensity.

Overall - 4.25/5
Overall this is a great beer and a great saison. I loved the saison taste, combined with subtle fall flavors.

De Ogen was a definite crowd pleaser over Thanksgiving. Even the self-proclaimed saison haters of our bunch appreciated what "Saisonstein's Monster" brought to the table. There was a great balance between pumpkin/spice and complex earthiness. It had more body and malt character than a typical saison (thank you pumpkin?) and more carbonation than the typical pumpkin ale, which made it both rich and refreshing. Overall, a really delicious and distinctive pumpkin ale that's worth the hunt.

This may be my first pumpkin saison.
A - Pours a hazy amber with 1/4" head.
S - All I smell is pumpkin and spices.
T - Very nice pumpkin & spice flavor, present but not overpowering.
M - Much more carbonated than the typical pumpkin ale. Crisp finish.
O - This is a very good pumpkin beer, a little different than the rest of the pack. The label suggest this pairs well with food and I can see that.

Best pumpkin beer of the year IMO. Complex aroma and flavors. ABV not overpowering for the number.

Rated as "(7 of 10 ) Buy all local inventory" on my personal scale.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours hazy reddish orange color with a 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big pumpkin, banana, pear, apple, white grape, bubblegum, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread, brown sugar, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big pumpkin, banana, pear, apple, white grape, bubblegum, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread, brown sugar, toast, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, banana, pear, apple, white grape, bubblegum, clove, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, gingerbread, brown sugar, toast, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome pumpkin spiced saison! All around great balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt notes; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

22oz bomber poured into a tulip.

This beer looks like fall- beautiful deep orange with hues of red and amber. Cream-colored, dense foam but not too thick. Wonderful aromas of pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, and some saison "earthiness". Taste follows suit with a great balance of pumpkin, spice, and Belgian-yeast character- earthy, herbal, and just a subtle hint of tartness to round things out. Medium-bodied, crisp and enjoyably effervescent. 8.4% ABV is well hidden.

Overall this is an outstanding pumpkin ale. the saison base is truly unique and the emphasis on pumpkin makes this a true "pumpkin" ale as opposed to a pumpkin pie beer overwhelmed by spicing.
