Its hard to think about such a malt dominant beer being so light. But that's what Pilsner does. When done improperly that's a lot of opportunity to recognize flaws in flavor. But when done well, there's few more satisfying flavors out there.
Ten Ninety Brewing's 1916 does just this as it pours brightly with light golden rays of light. Sparkling like champagne at the onset of the pour, the beer builds a lofty cotton froth while releasing a perfume of floral honeysuckle, light apple and fresh baking bread. Simple sweetness graces the tongue with light and fresh pilsner grain, seemingly of fresh sweet dough, light honey and a dash of powdered sugar.
But a quick dissolve of malt sweetness, remnants of grain continue for a faint sense of cereal while the floral hops also quickly develop into a balancing herbal taste of lemongrass, straw and peppery greens. A light apple quality adds an element of complexity and intrigue while the lager dives head first into a bone dry finish of lemon pepper, parsley and fresh grass clippings.
Light, crisp and highly refreshing, 1916 finishes spicy with hops and with a hint of cereal sweetness and with a brief afterglow of floral and grain character. Its a welcomed taste that is rarely attempted and even more scarcely achieved in the beer world whether craft or industrial beer related or not.
