Mildly hazy gold, huge rocky white head, rings down the glass. Smell: lots of pear, moderately floral, allspice, cereal grains. Taste: spicy, pear, grainy...crusty bread, clove, pepper, honey in the finish. Medium body is dragged into fluffy + full territory by the rather high amount of carbonation. Nice!

Pours into a becker a hazed light to medium golden with a huge blooming head that goes over the sides even with a pretty gentle pour, seems to be a bit over carbonated.A mix of yeast, caramel and nutty malts mixed with some bread dough in the nose.A little spritzy in the mouth but not overly sharp.Mild sweetness on the palate and quite yeast forward with some decent spice from the rye coming thru, quite bready with a lower hop profile.Take away a few minor details and this would be top notch,it's a rustic lager and a little rough around the edges.

a very well done and highly drinkable multigrain rustic lager done in collaboration with burial, who seems to be collaborating with just about everyone lately. this is a great beer, layered with heartier grain character than we pretty much ever find in the style. the rye is obvious in nose and taste to me, a pale earthy rye, well dosed in the mash and giving this an old world vibe. the color is a shade darker than normal pale lagers, and there is a faint toasted nutty element from the grain here too, an average white head rests on top once it settles down from the initial bottle pour. the high carbonation tickles my nose as i take a whiff. bready lager yeast carefully conditioned, bread crusts, light earthy funk, and a soft peppery element from the rye all jump out, and carry over equally to the flavor. this is fuller bodied but very alive, dry and easy drinking for its depth of flavor, and just seems to have a lot more grain character overall than i am used to in the style. part of it may have been set and setting, drinking a bottle of this with good friends before a fabulous dinner at the actually blackberry farm, but this impressed me quite a lot. more craft brewers should brew lagers like this!

On tap at Wakefest. Clear golden. Smells of floral hops and doughy bready malts. Tastes a little fruity up front with doughy malt and spicy rye. Back end is earthy hops and a touch of yeastiness. Fruitiness lingers in the finish with a long hop bitterness. Light body. Dynamic and flavorful. I know Wakefest is all about the adjuncts stouts, but this was the beer of the festival for me.

A: Pours a lovely (and slightly hazy) pale gold, with a beautiful frothy, two-finger head.
S: Smells immediately grainy (as a lager should), with some slight floral notes, but minimal spice. To be honest everything is a little understated here, and this beer is not generally a very fragrant one.
T: Begins tasting mostly like shadowclock from Burial. Clean and crisp (quite grainy), with a slight astringency, along with some prominent floral and spicy notes. As the beer warms up, the farmhouse notes begin to come through, appearing as vague esters and pepper; the whole affair having a slightly honeyed flavor to it (a flavor which, in this case, I could either take or leave).
M: Medium body, a tad sticky (just a tad), and not dry enough for either style.
O: This is an interesting beer because while I think it succeeds in it's aim, I don't think it's aim was properly anticipated or particularly good. On the surface I think that saisons and lagers can scratch a lot of the same itches, but if you dig a little deeper, they satisfy entirely different desires. A funky Saison is acceptable, even encouraged, but a funky Lager is not, dare I say if it is funky then it ceases to fulfill it's purpose, indeed one of the indirect purposes of the invention of lagering altogether. This beer is not clean enough to be an amazing lager, and not funky, bitter or spicy enough to be a good Saison. In a general sense this is an enjoyable beer, and in the sense that enjoyment is measure by taste it's a pretty good beer, but inasmuch as this beer is a well considered, necessary point of evolution, I would say it's only necessary to the point that it proves we don't need to explore this idea any more.
