Our PDX beer-sorcerors’ take on a classic Polish style, this liquid marvel was brewed with 100% smoked wheat malt and hopped with Saaz & Mandarina Bavaria. Low in ABV and with assertive carbonation, it’s a wonderfully unique and incredibly refreshing beer style that stands a pretty solid chance to become your new BFF.

From a can
Pours a brilliant white gold with a generous, creamy crown of foam.
The whispers of smoke are up front, dominating the nose. On the sip the smoke is present, although a subtle biscuit malt comes across as well. The first I’ve had of this style, but hopefully not the last.

On tap at the source.
Light smoke, rather simple and very light. Thin, earthy, smoldering wood smoke. Overcarbonated, thin body, light, seltzer like acidity and mineral that obscures the smoke.

Glass: Burgeon .5L pilsner glass
Price: $13 for a 4-pack
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: July 25, 2020; Picked up: July 29, 2020
Consumed: July 31, 2020
Misc.: Canned on July 17, 2020 at 10:07 a.m. PT
Grabbed a 4-pack of this with a host of others for the second special release of July by Modern Times. Had never heard of a Grodziskie, but apparently it was a smoked beer. The email description called this, “Our PDX beer-sorcerors’ take on a classic Polish style, this liquid marvel was brewed with 100% smoked wheat malt and hopped with Saaz & Mandarina Bavaria. Low in ABV and with assertive carbonation, it’s a wonderfully unique and incredibly refreshing beer style that stands a pretty solid chance to become your new BFF.” Here goes nothing.
Poured a medium yellow clear color with two fingers of off-white frothy-to-fizzy head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass at different speeds. Outstanding watery lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled smoke, rubber, orange, citrus, banana and hints of Mandarina Bavaria. Much of the same from the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Taste followed the nose. In order got smoke, rubber, wood, peat moss, orange, citrus and black pepper. For hops, lightly detected to Mandarina Bavaria and had a lingering peppery taste, probably from the Saaz. (Taste - 4.25)
Light body. Thin texture. Lively carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Well. This was my first go at a Grodziskie and I liked it. Nice to try a new style. (Overall - 4.25)

Pale clear yellow brew with abundant foam in the Peroni Lager glass. Quite fragrant with the smoked malt. There really is no flavor to this, just the smoky water followed by a bitter finish. It's actually kind of pleasant for something with the considerably less alcohol than Corona Light. The brewers notes say this is "brewed with 100% smoked wheat malt and hopped with Saaz and Mandarina Bavaria."
The smoke gets a little heavy as the glass warms, and the stuff is so thin the bitterness gets to be a bit much. Still, for an unusual and refreshing quaffer, I'm glad I have the four-pack. Another brew from the July 2020 MT pre-sale. From the 16 oz can dated 7/17/2020 on the bottom.
