Bomber scored in a recent trade - big thanks to Chris for including this one. Served well-chilled.
Pours a clouded orange-amber hue, with one finger of frothy, creamy white head situated atop. It fades off over the next two minutes, leaving behind a foamy cap and collar along with some scattered patches of lace. Fruity notes characterise the aroma, including notes of tropical (passion?) fruit, peach, strawberry, citrus and bready pale malt sweetness. Also some hints of straw, grass and light yeasty spice.
Very approachable flavours. Grainy, doughy pale malts and restrained honey sweetness are continuous fixtures throughout the sip, accompanied by fruity flavours of peach, grape, citrus and sweet cherry during the first half. Hints of yeast, grassy hay and earthy spice on the back end, with some grapey, berry-like sweetness lasting briefly into the aftertaste (which thereafter dries out). Medium in body, with spritzy carbonation featuring tiny, prickly bubbles that continuously agitate the palate. Crisp texture; quite refreshing for something that is 7.5% - and on that note, I have to say there's no indication whatsoever of the sturdy abv, which could make this a dangerous brew given its general tastiness.
Final Grade: 3.96, a solid B+. Le Chant Des Wallons isn't a world-beater, but by Ontario farmhouse ale standards it's a perfectly acceptable brew that I'm happy to have had the chance to try. In fact, I've had no fewer than 5 new Ontario saisons over the last few weeks, and Le Chant is easily one of the best in that crowd. I love the hop flavours, but the base saison itself is a little lacking in funkiness/yeast complexity. Still, it's a yummy little concoction that I wouldn't hesitate to drink again in the future. Thanks again, Chris - this was a great introduction to the 5 Paddles portfolio.
