Fast on the heels of summer, there's few flavors that quench the thrist and fuel the hot season like watermelon. But with those delicate and finesse-driven flavors at hand, it takes the supple complexity of wheat beer to both support and promote the whimsical watermelon character.
Blue Stallion's Whet T-shirt dives right in with a pale straw pour and a medium-dense haze. Emboldened carbonation fuels a fluffy, arid but short-lived head. The unmistakable perfume of watermelon, cucumber, mint and light pawpaw play on the nose with perhaps a light peppery clove twinge. Its supple breadiness is sweet with shortbread and freshly kilned grain.
As the juicy watermelon washes over the tongue, the wheat beer underneath holds firm with a dry, crisp and wafer-thin sweetness that adds a ripeness and vibrancy to the fruit additions. With its light vanilla, clove and white pepper balancing the fruit, watermelon overtones link up with light banana, apple and lemon with a unique zing. Finishing minty and cucumber-like, the rind-ish cucumber components bring the taste full circle.
Build for high refreshment, the ale is medium-light, and given its watermelon character, somewhat watery and light. As the carbonaiton gives the ale a bounce up front, its peppery balance comes to life with a light herbal bitterness to close.
