With the fall fest bier at its foundation, the experimental nature of their "Test Batch Tuesday" employs the curious taste of cherry and chocolate to the marzen style for a little seasonal charm, whimsy and robust taste in fall-like fashion.
With a deep and crystal clear stare, the chestnut hues are brilliant and bold. Its creamy but delicate froth carry savory and toasted aromatics that range nutty, chocolate, coffee-like and unmistakably- cherry. And as the malts layer upon the mouth, its elegant malt profile is just shy of caramel or honey but is decidedly malty with a pep of modestly roasted cocoa nibs.
The middle palate is awash with toasted grain, nutty, cocoa and lightly seared with freshly kilned barley sweetness. A quick balance from the tartness of cherries rise to pierce and offset the malty sweetness while carrying a tangy, mildly acidic and playfully tannic bite. Its floral upstart turns lightly peppery and minty as the noble German hops round out the bulk of taste.
Finishing malty-dry, tangy and off-sour, the medium-bodied marzen exits the palate with the robust taste of chocolate and nuttiness but with the curious twang from the cherry pit, stem and skin. Its a playful and charming lager with some challenge and intrigue.
