Notes: The barrel stock we tasted through to choose the 2019 BBT blend is the exact same stock that we pull from for the Derivations and all of our stouts. We have brewed 15 different stout recipes, aged them in a variety of barrels, and then always thoughtfully selected and blended to achieve our goals, whether it be Beer : Barrel : Time, a new blend of Derivation or the Barrel-Aged Stouts by Shared Brewing.

BBT 2019 consists of:
O.W.K. recipe aged in Willett Bourbon barrels for 21 months
O.W.K. recipe aged in Eagle Rare barrels for 21 months
Derivation Blend #3 recipe aged in Knob Creek barrels for 22 months
Derivation Blend #3 recipe aged in Knob Creek barrels for 28 months
Derivation Blend #2 recipe aged in Willett Bourbon barrels for 20 months

Stark black with a short mocha blanket dispersing to a flat collar that's creamy here and bubbly there.

Aroma is toasted, chocolate dipped marshmallow with a mild char while taste is more dry, nutty, dusty and spicy, with a slightly lighter feel than expected. Actually, it's fairly warming, hot even, and quite thin, with a dark fruit exhale at this point in time.

As the locals insisted, this is a huge step up over the original 2017 vintage. At the same time, it also served as an illustrative side by side with a rye barrel aged Dark Lord, particularly helping to level set with today's sweet palates compared to the perceived sweetness of DL, showing just how balanced Dark Lord is by today's absurd standards. These two beers were actually more alike than they were different, and it was difficult to choose the superior, ultimately siding with myself as the winner. It's all the more fitting we've come full circle together next to another Dark Lord, considering my first dance with a BBT was at DLD.

That said, my memory of Continuance b1 is a hair above how I feel I enjoyed this, so I'll see that my rating reflect the same.

The beer pours out super dark and viscous! The smell is bourbon soaked brownie batter. The beer coats your mouth and is an expulsion of barrel, creaminess, and chocolate. Love this beer!

Thick legs and deep black color. Chocolatey with a notable barrel presence and malt complexity. Incredible thick mouth feel with a long, sweet finish.

This is astounding stuff. This reminds me of the first Goose Island BCS I had back in 06 at the soruce, thinking how this couldn't be real, simply because of what the beer conveyed. Yes, it's thick, heavy and chewy, but damn, is it even beer? There's all the hallmarks of a top notch stout - cocoa, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate and yes, loads of barrel, all layered, but what sets this apart is the integration. Near effortless. Yes, it's boozy, yes, there's some alcohol burn but thats the point of this beer. Unlike the 2017, which is a little oxidized and soy like, this invites you to keep drinking and revisit. A remarkable beverage.

750ml bottle served in a Side Project stemmed glass. Dark motor oil black body, half finger offwhite head, not much retention, no lacing. Lots of legs on this beer. Smell is massive chocolate brownies, a bit of tobacco leaves and smoke. Smooth whiskey, a bit of chocolate fudge. Oak. More tobacco leaves. Flavour follows-- big chocolate fudge, brownies, slight smoke, fair bit of tobacco, cocoa, whiskey barrel and vanillin. Man, that is some intense stuff- it makes me wait a bit between sips as the intense chocolate fudge and tobacco flavours just keep on rolling on the palate. Full bodied, substantial, lower carbonation, creamy with massive barrel and fair bit of tobacco on the finish. Deliciously intense. The archetype of barrel aged stout in 2019. It has that big barrel and chocolate of Voodoo Black Magicks, but with a rich tobacco and char and even fuller body. In my opinion, just as good as BBT 2018 which didn't deliver as much tobacco and char as this one did.

From bottle at Side Project's The Cellar.

Like it's 2018 predecessor, this is an intensely complex beer packing flavors that are hard to fathom being present with no adjuncts or additives introduced during the brewing process. Beer:Barrel:Time 2018 is my favorite beer all time, and this just tied it.

Extremely deep and dark viscous appearance with minimal, caramel colored foam around the edge of glass. Aromas are of vanilla, cacao, chocolate, even nutty... dark, strong... deep bourbon barrel character. Like mentioned, intense complexity. It's chewy almost in texture. Sticky mouthfeel and the flavors linger and evolve in your mouth with each sip. There really is no beer that's currently brewed quite like it. Only beers entering this class (straight up, no-adjunct barrel aged stout) for me are Assassin '14, Maman '17 and its predecessor Beer:Barrel:Time 2018.
