Blended exclusively for our friend Paul Hayden at The Wine and Cheese Place in St. Louis, this one-off blend of Double Barrel Derivation was brewed in 2016 and aged in TWCP store pick bourbon barrels. We then finished the mature barrel-aged stout in Willett bourbon and VSOP cognac barrels for another aging before selecting a final blend that exemplifies the Derivation name.

Disappointing. I wish I could’ve gone back and tried it again , like maybe it was a fluke. But if I’d been blindfolded I would’ve NEVER guessed that this was the beer it was. Didn’t have that derivation thickness, was almost smoky and I was getting weird coffee notes… weirdly high carb too. #SPInvitational2022

Overrated.
The nose on this beer is spectacular. The double barrel treatment is magic.
The taste is underwhelming; a one-note fudge stout along the lines of a pedestrian Maman. It needs vanilla/coconut/cinnamon/cocoa nibs/maple syrup to cover up the inadequacy of the base stout.
The body is thin. We're talking Central Waters level thin.
Overall, another hype-driven disappointment, courtesy of Saint Louis.

poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter. thick, pitch black pour. no head. bourbon, oak, chocolate and an unidentifiable spirit sting that must be the cognac on the nose. taste mostly follows with so much spirit barrel and oak against the backdrop of a chocolate-forward base stout. for no adjuncts, this thing is complex and full of flavor. thick mouthfeel, although not as thick as other derivations or BBTs. still, nothing to complain about and plenty thick in the grand scheme of things. incredible double barrel-aged imperial stout. glad to have had the opportunity to try it.

Pitch black appearance with no foam presence seconds after pour. This is insanely complex in aroma and flavor. Each sip takes you through layers and layers of barrel sweetness flavors. Cognac sweetness is noticed. It’s not boozy, but it’s heavy and rich.
Compared to BBT b2 & b3, this has similar (albeit different) depth of flavor, but BBT does have a slightly thicker feel. In either case, it’s amazing and silly with how complex it is at the same time. A real treat.
