Served on-draught into stemware. Cost was 360 forent; reviewed from notes taken in Budapest at Legenda's bar in Summer 2014. 4.8% ABV.
HEAD: 2 fingers wide. White colour with pinkish hues. Terribly thin. Not much cream or froth here. Above average (~3-4 minute) retention. Spotty inconsistent lacing. Should be much fuller and softer looking.
BODY Dark pink-red. Nontransparent; nontranslucent. I see no yeast particulate or sediment within. Appears adequately carbonated. Not as bright or vibrant as would be ideal, but generally appealing - even if it isn't great given the ostensible style.
AROMA: Cherry skin, ripe sweet cherry, candi sugar, some white sugar. I pick up on some faint tartness buried beneath the fruity sweetness, but it's pretty light. I detect no yeasty notes, alcohol, or off-notes.
It's a pleasant aroma of average intensity. I'm hoping this doesn't veer into medicinal cough syrup territory...
TASTE: Tart cherries. Cherry skin. Neutral malt backbone. Mild sweetness. Some artificial sweet fruity notes - possibly from extract or additives. I find no true sourness here, nor any bacterial notes. It's built pretty generically for a purported kriek, lacking any depth, nuance, or subtlety. Simple but cohesive, though it certainly doesn't feel like a gestalt whole of a flavour profile. Balance is okay.
I like it generally, but it is too sweet.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, medium-bodied, overly thick, and sugary. This texture doesn't suit the taste all that well. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy on the palate. It has an okay overall presence. Decently executed.
OVERALL: A forgettable, unremarkable attempt at a kriek. Not as drinkable as it should be, and not worth getting again - but it's decent. Its artificiality will turn off discerning drinkers. Not a bad brew at its price if you're an ex-pat, but I wouldn't recommend it otherwise.
