Buck-a-Beer is here in London, ON. Hard to be the value with the overall lofty-priced beer in Ontario.

First time trying and my impression is this: It's...okay.
Absolutely drinkable, with a nice pale lager color. Minimal head. Nothing subtle in the smell.
First taste is overwhelmingly sweet, but that is to be expected with Ontario lagers.
Will buy again as a basement fridge stocker, but nothing in particular makes this beer special. Just an easy cheap buy.

Let's start with: COOL BEER IS THE BEST BEER YOU CAN BUY IN ONTARIO ! Cool Beer is still buck-a-beer and that makes it stand out. Cool may not be the absolute best tasting beer sold in Ontario, but Cool is definitely the best beer value available in Ontario, maybe all of Canada. And that's cool !

Cool Beer is a good standard lager that tastes just like Blue, Canadian, Moosehead, Budweiser, Coors and Miller. Cool has 5% ABV too. But Cool sells for half the price of the others, literally. If you are going to buy a lager in Ontario, you might as well buy Cool. You can take home twice as many bottles of Cool Beer as Blue, for the same total cash outlay. The Cool bottle even carries a blue label that makes Cool look like a bottle of Blue.

Makes me wonder about all the other beer companies that have been ripping us off for years charging $2 to $4 per bottle of lager. The craft breweries are some of the worst. They charge $3 or more for a bottle of their precious craft lager, which is no better than Budweiser or Canadian. Well, the Cool Brewery produces a perfectly good blonde craft lager for $1. So are all the other brewers just greedy?

I do not work for, nor am I associated with, the Cool Brewery in any capacity whatsoever. I am just a big fan of value for my money.

No recent reviews, so I'll add one. This is currently the only beer available at Ontario's "The Beer Store" to have permanently adopted the government's "buck-a-beer" minimum pricing. As such, at $0.29 / 100ml, it is 25% less expensive than most mainstream beers. I tried it out. While billed as a craft, if comes off much more like a macro. That said, I did not find anything objectionable about it. You would be hard pressed to tell a difference between it and, say, Molson Canadian in a blind test. Perfectly adequate for a cheap lager.

341 mL bottle from a 4-pack picked up at The Beer Store. Bottled December 30th 2015 and served well chilled.

Pours a bright crystal clear golden yellow color, capped off with one finger of foamy white head. It fades away steadily over the next 90 seconds or so, soon being reduced to a thin, frothy cap and collar. Not much lacing. The aroma is comparable to most cheap domestic lagers, with a corny, cereal grain smell and some grainy pale malt sweetness. Hints of straw and Corn Pops.

Unobjectionable, at least if your standards are as low as mine. Grainy pale malt sweetness makes up 90 percent of the flavour profile, though there is a little bit of a corn flake vibe to it. Kind of a dirty, weedy hop note on the back end with a mildly sweet aftertaste. Light in body, with slightly weak carbonation for a pale lager. Still fairly crisp and refreshing, and not bad when served cold.

Final Grade: 2.96, a borderline C grade. Cool Beer is far from a newcomer to the Ontario beer market, but seems to be more of a GTA-centred phenomenon than anything. I live nowhere near Toronto, which made it fairly easy to skip this one on the few occasions where I did see it previously. At 6 dollars for 4 bottles, it's about as good as you'd expect - marginally better than your typical macro, but well behind most true craft beers. Easy to beat, except on price point.

Look: this is where the beer falls short. A little too clear for my liking, and looks exactly like a macro. Minimal head that fades fast.

Smell: smells like a typical lager. There are some hints of honey, and overall smells quite pleasant compared to macros in Canada like Coors light, Molson, Sleeman etc.

Taste: to me, this tastes outstanding for what it is. Lagers will never give you a bold taste, but I don't want a bold taste. I want a nice crisp refreshing drink that goes down easy and has a nice aftertaste. This one provides all that, and without the chemicals.

Feel: slightly watery and decent carbonation. Easily chuggable and light feel to it.

Overall: i am only 23 and am just making my foray into craft beers, but for a guy coming from Coors and Molson, this was a breath of fresh air. Because they do little marketing and only offer three styles, they are able to only charge $33 for a 24 right now, and at that price I will continually buy this beer and support this Toronto brewery. A little light for a 5%er, but it goes down easy and is sure to be an upgrade over any other macro.

This beer pours a big head of white froth which recedes with a thin film and light lacing. Colour is really pale, a sort of bright yellow-gold.

Nose is of malt, smells a bit skunked. Also a fair bit of fruit influence.

The taste is hard to get my head around. It is at the same time sour, bitter and slightly fruity, with malt also. I'd say it might have more flavour intensity than the run of the mill macro, but not making it a whole lot better.
Mouthfeel is quite watery, then the carbonation kicks in to give a bit of bite on the tongue.

Decidedly average. Mouthfeel and taste can be slightly offensive. Drinkable but uninspiring.
