There's a concert in our midst. Look up, and soak it in. Listen close, and you just might hear something. With its unique combination of peppery sweetness, refreshing acidity, and a hint of farmhouse funk, Birdsong is your patch cable to the live mix in the treehouse.

Really tough to get through. Thought I'd try something new without first checking the ratings. Big mistake. Had it with some nachos and quesadillas, which sadly wasn't quite enough to distract me from the flavor. Pours clear golden.

clear pale yellow with streaming carbonation and a lingering 1 finger head. Nose is pale spice, some bubble gum, and pale malt. Taste is similar to the nose with everything up front though that gets washed away by carbonation and ends with a lingering hint of earthy hops. Body is light to medium with medium to high carbonation. Ends dry. Overall has the basic outline of a saison, but is missing the depth. Nothing special, and very forgettable but also nothing insulting other than the fact that its lacking depth.

L - Clear, yellow-orange with gold highlights, white head that had to be coaxed with an aggressive pour into a Duvel tulip but retreated leaving a ringed island supplied by a healthy stream of carbonation initiated by the cut "D" at the bottom of the glass.
S - Tropical/citrus fruits with a hint of farmhouse funk.
T - Grassy/veg with a little lemon drop not much complexity
F - Clean and light
O - Taste dropped the ball.

From a can from the brewery, poured into teku glass, reviewed by my girlfriend.

Pale and cloudy. Very little head. Sweet malt flavor. Not very strong smell. Taste reminds of Miller light. Crisp white wine aftertaste. Mildly carbonated. Light.

Overall, I think the beer is better than the sum of its parts. She says she thinks it's a good beer for people who like beer and people who don't.

A surprisingly good saison for a brewer that makes its money in the American adaptation of the English tradition.
Looks are average, not enough foam. Smells are above average, some fruit and some bread; but the yeast does not perform like the real deal of the masters. Tastes improve mostly with more fruits, lemon and spice; but again the yeast limits the malt from flowering fuller. Same in the mouth, but bubbly and refreshing.

I give some Big OA Hugs to Temperance as they are still Evanston's leading micro; undeterred in the town that was dry until 1972 and had no retail beer stores until 1985. Evanston, we should not forget, his the national HQ to the Women's Christian Termperance Union... a well-intentioned effort to protect women from domestic violence that went awry and created a constitutional mess that had to be un-done. But, I digress.

5/26/20 Review revised and now keeping count over at UnTappd.

From the growler via Country Fresh Market in Beechmont. This decent
saison pours a pale yellow with a decent head of white foam that subsides to a thick
ring, thin wafting layer. Nose of subtle white pepper, light phenol notes of banana
and bread, and subtle orange and lemon zest with touches of light bread.
Flavors lightly surpass the nose with subtle candy sugar and cracker notes
that have been given a medium dash of orange and lemon zest with light herbal
hops and subtle yeast and then given a moderate dash of white pepper.
Nice mouth feel; medium body, medium light carbonation that is effervescent
and lifting, and a lightly tart and moderately dry finish.

Of note with warmth there are white grape notes which is very nice.

Overall, a mighty fine brew from a new to me brewery!

Cheers

12oz can. Pale golden in color with a creamy white head. Earthy aroma with some bready yeast, maybe wheat and a touch of citrus. Funky flavors that don't sit well with me: herbal, citric lemon/orange, spice, earth, pepper, flowers. Lighter body, higher carbonation, dry & acidic finish. I'll be honest; I don't like this one.
