Definitely an AMERICAN brown ale. Very hoppy, but the malt really balances it out well.

Pours an effervescent hazel color with 3+ fingers of rocky tan head. Tons of lacing & good head retention

S: Toasty & nutty

T: Toastyness, nuttiness & dryness up front. Toastyness, some brown sugar, woody hops & dryness as this warms. Finishes dry & toasty, slight herbal & woody hop finish

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation

Drinks easy, a very nice brown

Appearance: Dark brown with light gold highlights, decent cap and lacing, attractive color for a style not noted for attractive color.

Aroma: Brown roasted malt hinting toward coffee, some hops in the background.

Taste: Much better than the aroma. Solid ale like structure of malt almost forward but quickly eclipsed by roasted malt bitterness. Don't know where they're going here, something to stand up to the American hops perhaps. I was about to say they missed the mark when the finish kicked in revealing underlying layers of malt and dark fruit flavors. Darn, if only the beer tasted like that all the way through this could be a standout. As is it's just another American style brown ale with enough over roasted malt/coffeeish touches to mar what might have been an outstanding flavor. A bit of lingering hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

Texture: Good, it's no lightweight but won't sink the ship either.

Overall: Ok, one man's opinion, worth every cent you paid, if they cut back the burnt malt some, the hops a little, enhanced those underlying flavors a bit more then, yes.

Great dark body, good amount of head. First smells are that of cocoa and dark toasty malt. Medium to heavy body with a dry finish. Less sweet than other Browns I have tasted. Not terrible but would likely not buy again.

Great American Brown Ale. Very reminiscent of a Coop Native Amber. Beautiful dark brown hue. West coast hops differentiate this from British brown ales with a crisp lemony finish. Balanced more towards the hops than the roasted malt, but not overwhelmingly so. Probably more hoppy than I would drink all night, but a really high quality complex beer.
