Kamikaze Monk is a 5.6% ABV Belgian Saison hopped up with the best (and possibly only) Japanese hop: Sorachi Ace. With a big nose of citrus fruits from our Saison yeast and lemon butter from the hops, it blends the two country's brewing styles together. A medium-thin body allows for a big hop flavour of citrus to kick through and a light malt character to round it out. Please do not try and Kamikaze yourself. It might be hard, but you've been warned.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery last month; no packaging date. Sweet label art, but not as sweet as the tuba player who was rockin' the fuck out of the brew pub when I visited. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy golden-yellow colour, capped off with a two finger crown consisting of soapy, bubbly, bone white-coloured head. Good retention; it dies down slowly over a five-plus-minute period, caking the glass with a curtain of sticky lace as it seeps away, eventually bequeathing a generously foamy cap and collar. I am getting some intensely citric notes on the nose - lemon peel and oil both come to mind, with lesser hints of grapefruit, stone fruit and bubblegum. There's also a pleasant, but subtle yeast funkiness, along with a touch of phenolic spice.
Pretty tasty. The malt base is a bit doughy and bready; maybe a flash of butterscotch and orchard fruit, but the Sorachi Ace hops are dominant from then on. Intensely citrusy, and very lemon-focused - lots of zesty peel, as well as notes of white grapefruit and lemon oil. It finishes with a pithy, oily astringency that lingers somewhat, but fades off quickly - revealing the presence of a nice, yeasty aftertaste that provides a bite of peppery spice. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a restrained crispness. Relatively smooth, slick mouthfeel with great drinkability; this is the sort of beer that I could theoretically chug, if that were not a total waste of what I have left.
Final Grade: 4.15, a worthy A-. If you're a hophead with a soft spot for saisons, Block Three's Kamikaze Monk will certainly be relevant to your interests. The lemony Sorachi Ace hops may not agree with everyone, but I find that they work very nicely with the spicy, yeasty tail end of the profile. I think perhaps that this brewery's being just slightly outside the sphere of influence of the GTA has caused them to fly under the radar a bit - they produce a lot of solid stuff, and this is another impressive brew to add to the list. Hope to see this one back at some point in the future.
