650ml bottle - apparently this is a Saison series that will have differing guest grains in the malt bill. The current one is rye, oats, corn, and rice.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some wind-whipped ashy campfire lace around the glass as it slowly melts out of existence.

It smells of a random grain farmer's field in late summer - barley, dried corn, and husky rice - muddled earthy spice, a touch of generic fruitiness, and some weak edgy yeasty notes. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, heat-free rye whisky, some banana chip and dry citrus rind fruitiness, rice crackers, black peppercorn and coriander spice, and a very subtle leafy, weedy, and dead floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly active in its perky frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and more or less smooth, with just a touch of yeasty intransigence the typical culprit here. It finishes trending dry - all crisp and edgy in its complex graininess.

Overall, this is an interesting concept, one that is taking root here in Alberta, but it looks to be a thing elsewhere as well - that is, focusing on fleshing out the malty side of the equation, rather than the hoppy side. Grain can be farm-fresh, too, and this is a damned fine example of it.

Look: light amber, splash of foam.

Smell: clove, dark pepper, spice, banana, fragrant dirt, occasional prickle of lemon zest.

Taste: supremely dry, clean finish which clears the palate and seeds it with a zephyr of puckery grasses and stems. Initially sweet cloves and thin banana slices brush the lips before disappearing into lemon shadows. Grains peek through from the cheeks when chewing on the taste; they bushel together with tufts of grass in the long coda.

Feel: low carbonation yet remains biting.

Overall: The bouquet of aromas translate into distinct stages of sweet, then verdant, tastes. Imagine a bee bumbling through the late morning before settling under evening garden arms.
