I'm not sure why this beer is categorized as an American pale lager because it is a smoke Helles in the style of the Schlekerla helles from Bamberg. It is a wonderful example of that style. If you like the Schlenkerla beers, or smoked beers in general you can't go wrong with this beer.

On tap at the brewery.
The appearance was a golden yellow color with a quickly dissipating sheet of a white foamy head that didn't leave any lace.
The aroma had a nice sweet smoky somewhat like Beechwood chip-like smoothness. Subtle meat sweetness and a light grassy to earthy hoppiness.
The flavor was basically the same with a clean semi-sweet meat to Beechwood aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied as it seemed to sit just a touch under making it a fabulous sessionable smoked lager. Fairly low carbonation and the ABV felt right.
Overall, very nicely done smoked lager that I would have again.
