pretty packaging again, these guys are doing a really nice job getting their beer to market lately. this is a black saison with blackberries and raspberries, but leaves a lot to be desired for me. the beer for one, presents itself more as a brown ale, with a dominant chocolate malt note running through it, and with the fruit, almost feels desserty rather than saisony. in that regard, the yeast might be a french saison strain, but its awfully mild, maybe fermented a little too cool, or maybe just lost to the other bold flavors here. the fruit is good, but im not sure is screams fresh berries, it has an almost dried and concentrated sweetness to it, it works, but its not the best use of the berries in here i dont think. i like the flavors, just less impressive as a fruited dark saison because those aspects are the weak points. almost tastes like a fruity brownie for a moment, but it does dry out pretty well in the end. i think the idea here is far better than the execution, and they need to find a way to get more yeast character to show though in future batches. not a bad beer, and it may improve over time with live yeast in the bottle, but at this price, i am not sure i am willing to take a chance on it getting better enough to justify the expenditure...
