Pours a reddish mahogany coloration with a small, fizzy head. Smells mostly of pumpkin pie spices, specifically cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, with a hint of squash and doughy malt coming through as well. Taste follows the nose, being heavily dominated by the spices, with cinnamon and nutmeg most prominent, although there is also a definite and slightly tart squash presence to this as well, along with some doughy, caramel malt, brown sugar and oak in the background as well. Not much of a bourbon presence detectable. Finishes with a light bitterness and the spice lingering in the aftertaste. Thin mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
I haven't had many pumpkin beers to compare this, but I really think it is excellent. Just a great balance of the spices, squash and sweeter elements that are all distinct without drowning each other out. The bourbon really doesn't come out much, but that's no big deal, the beer is fine without it. Really tastes just like I would imagine pumpkin pie to taste like. Shame that the mouthfeel is rather thin, but still an excellent brew.
