Amongst lager heads, Rothaus Brauerei Rothaus holds legendary status with it's awesome old school designs and awesome lagers. Brewed in Grafenhausen located in Germany’s Black Forest, their beers have always been an after work staff favorite around OH and you’ll often find a case or two hanging out in the warehouse cold room.
The team at Rothaus noticed our love for their lagers and gave us a chance to collab on a single-decoction pilsner brewed with grains from their local maltster, Best Malz, and a pallet of Tettnanger hops from their farm-of-choice in Germany. To give this collaboration an Other Half twist, we added some NZ grown Wai-iti for that new world vibe.

Pours a cloudy yellow color. As it sits, it clears up a bit, but its definitely still cloudy. Two finger white head forms on the beer before dissipating. A thin layer of sudsy foam remains on the beer along with sudsy white lacing on the glass.
Aroma has notes of sweet bread, straw, with a strong hoppy aroma - spicy, herbal, almost vegetal.
Taste follows the nose with notes of white bread, sweet bread, straw, giving way to a amply hopped back end and finish. Hops are spicy, herbal, with a prominent bitterness. The American influence is readily apparent in the hopping of this beer.
Feel is light, crisp, and easy drinking. Bright carbonation.
Overall a nice pilsner, albeit one that is a bit too hopped for my preference.

I love the beer this was inspired by, this however lacks balance with the hops in the taste: huge grass, herbs, and vegetable hop bitters atop the bready yeast and cracker malt. An IPL in disguise. Smell is hop dominated too, perhaps even more so than the taste as it warms, has some lemon in there. Feel is super hopped, light, decently crisp, and sharp with cutting edges. That being said it looks great with a golden murky body and two fingers of white foam. Disappointing

16 oz. can. Clear golden. Smells of spicy hops and grass with a little breadiness. Pretty aggressive hop aroma. Tastes aggressively hopped as well. Grass, herbals, strong spicy hops, light bready malt, a touch of caramel. Medium light. Aggressive, but good.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow, robust, fluffy 2" head that leaves some soft pillows of head and nice streaky lacing. Nose is, of all things, pineapple candy off the bat; behind that that is lemon, yeast, some mild hop spiciness, but the pineapple note is pretty dominant. Taste has a nice, full, and refreshing malt backbone - not overly sweet in any way, but round notes of fresh baked white bread, saltines, and biscuit on the finish; hops are refreshingly bitter, with very little "new world" sweetness - certainly exceeded my expectations based on the nose. Feel is round but crisp - extremely refreshing, but with a bit less bite as the original; very far back in the finish, there are some vinous notes. In no way exceeds the original, but would welcome more collabs in this vein.

It’s chaos on the pitch right now between France and Switzerland - but everything is calm, cool, and collected in my glass. Damn, this son of a gun is poppin’ like Yosamity Sam at a hoe down. Serious business here, my peeps. I mean, this one is just glorious like a morning glory. Ok, Raul, maybe you’ve had enough.

Clear gold yet darkening somewhat to amber, it's got a tall white foam head that takes a while to settle into fuzzy lumps.
Having this side by side the inspiration, it's fruitier, more floral, and maltier. It's okay, but not anywhere close to the same quality as the original. It's also got this odd, wax lips sort of flavor in the aftertaste.
The pedigree of the original is made even clearer in this side by side, while the hype effect elevating the Other Half version becomes just as glaringly, starkly and painfully obvious.
Rothaus Pils Tannen Zäpfle is leagues above and beyond anything OH has done in this regard.

Pours a pale crystal clear straw. White head. Hoppy aroma. This is crisp and refreshing with a very focused bitter floral hop note that's almost medicinal. It’s not perfect, it’s not Rothaus, but it’s good. I thought Other Half may screw up the collab, but thankfully, this is respectable.

On tap at Other Half Finger Lakes in Bloomfield, NY.
This one pours a clear and brilliant golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This is tremendous. You get a big dose of hop spice from the Tettnanger, with some light grape, fresh cut grass, lemon, lime, and flowers.
This is really quite good. It's still mostly traditional and German in feel, with the Wai-iti hops adding a subtle dry lime and slightly wine-like bitterness to the beer. There's some wonderful baked breadiness.
This is light bodied, clean, and super crisp, with a fantastic drinkability.
It's pretty wild that OH was able to collab with such a classic and old school brewery.
