No bottling date (purchased from the brewery in 6/2020, so bottled before then); consumed on 11/4/21
Pours a clear, jet-brown hue with a massive head of taut, soapy, pale beige foam fed by a steady stream of lazy effervescence; retention appears almost unceasing, receding arduously to a wavy cap, large, fluffy collar, and myriad chunky, webby lacing coating the walls of the glass.
Aroma first highlights 100% dark cacao accented with chocolate cake crust and honey atop rye toast upfront; milk chocolate cereal grain carries an underlying lemon zest showing wisps of lactic funk over the middle, a tentative and punchy influence on the bouquet fading with dark roast coffee beans encompassed by a vague veil of rye whiskey on the back end.
Taste shows a soft funk highlighting lemon, before inviting tinges of wet charcoal against burnt coffee, turning toward a malt profile beaming with pumpernickel bread and rye accents into charry cacao contrasting lemon oils toward the finish.
Mouthfeel brings a light body with a full, fluffy carbonation, plush and rounded; a taut composure is levied over the mid-palate, stabilizing for an oncoming bright twang of sharpening acidity juxtaposing a semi-bitter char on the finish.
Uniquely competent in expressing definitively disparate elements, this dark farmhouse expression succeeds not through harmonizing distinctions, but through a focus on refinement of individual characteristics; if not perfect, conjoined in the somewhat chaotic spirit of a 'wild' ale, and all the more appreciable for it.

Poured from the bottle (no date I could find) into a stemmed Plan Bee tasting glass
L: pours a deep, dark brown/black with a very thick brown/cream head. Fades after a couple minutes but certainly still there, massive thick lacing
S: deep roasty/bitter nose, lots of that buckwheat coming through. Nutty as well, some honey sweetness. Rich aroma, not much of the farmhouse funk I get from other Plan Bee beers
T: follows the nose, with the flavors growing in depth and intensity. Roast again, rich, bitter but fits the beer overall. Honey comes through nicely and cuts the sharp taste. Very flavorful, complex dark ale. Medium finish
F: medium/high carbonation, somewhat thick body but not quite viscous - similar to other Plan Bee brews
O: as expected from Plan Bee, a delicious and complex farmhouse ale full of character. Not sure how many dark farmhouse ales I've had to compare this to but based on this a style I want to explore more
