Now my 3rd or 4th Kvass from them, I only reviewed one because they were all slightly different based on Middle Brow's bakery leftover bread and pizza crust. But, Pub Beer #2 is different enough as it claims to be an ESB or Extra Special Bitter in the English tradition. But, the Kvass is peasant beer from Russia. Given that Pub Beer #2 is made from leftover baked barley/wheat, this is an interesting hybrid. But, I won't analyze it too much other than to guess that an ESB yeast was used.
Better to say that I enjoyed Pub Beer #2 and guess that it is part of an on-going series of experiments.
#2 started well by Looking pretty in the tulip with a full head from the tap. Smells are hard to get excited about with the barley already baked and the hops barely present; but if you like bread (as I do), you will find enough dough here. Tastes are largely the same; uneventful, but balanced and a decent accompaniment to bread... which is primarily what I came in to buy. So I had some, and I was correct; a beer made for bread, and from bread. The feel is cleansing to the palate; good especially if the bread has butter on it.
I am a big fan of Middle Brow's creativity and their use of yeast in my two favorite foods... beer and bread.
