this is a style that doesnt get nearly enough love, the black saison. these guys have done a pretty nice job with this one, my only real critique is the yeast, which isnt very saisonesque, its more belgian, and it reminds me of some of the belgian beers they make in house, very similar on the yeast front. almost no funk and all high tone fruitiness to it, i dont love that aspect, but the rest of it is spot on. its midnight black in color, no brown in here at all, with a nice shine, less cloudy than a lot of saison types. the head is tall and airy and lasting, it looks great in the globe they serve it in at the brewery. the dark malt gives it a nice depth, roast and char, burnt malt almost, a little sweetness in the center, and a long coffee-like finish, bitter and big. the alcohol does show up just a little bit, just enough to slow my gulping down to sipping, not at all a bad thing. i get a little banana from the yeast, and a little cotton candy, white pepper too maybe in there faintly. the dark malt is what makes it for the though, they have done a nice job making this big but also very drinkable, and its interesting enough to hold my attention for several glasses. honestly one of the better beers ive had from here, despite my issues with the yeast. a brett finished edition would be amazing...
