Obelus Galaxy Batch 1000

Enjoyed in September, 2023. Purchased at the brewery; no bottled on date visible.

The bottle opens with a loud pop, but does not erupt. Whew! A gentle pour gives tremendous foam, not so much a cap as a top hat as it crests over the glass but does not froth. Noticeable Brett on the nose, to where it reminds me of Orval, almost. Lots of tasty barnyard notes, goat and hay and wet horse blanket, bloomy rind, and strawberry leaves. The hops have faded, expectedly, but lend some echoes of their former glory to the sip. Crisply effervescent, with tight bubbles and a drying finish. Delicious.

A classic saison with new world funky flair. Rich yeast and breadiness start the taste, followed by dank funk, slight pineapple, apple, and brett. Very balanced and sneaky full bodied, even with the brett lightness on the finish. A fine ale all around

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Gold Session. Clear golden color. Aroma is quite perfumey with herbal tea and chamomile notes. Taste has soft yeast funk, floral notes and a light, dry mineral bitterness on the finish without being acidic at all.

S - Aroma is funky brett, hay and light citrus.

T - The taste is funky brett, oak, pineapple and passionfruit.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Soft mouthfeel with a crisp dry finish.

O - A very tasty Saison. Nice mix of bright citrus and funky brett.

A hazy farmhouse beer, this is the color of a golden sunset, with a fluffy white head. The Brett is prominent on the nose, as expected, but the Galaxy hops jump in with bright citrus notes, notably tangerine.

The Brett is also present on the taste, but the hops cut the funk quite a bit (but not too much - this is still noticeably a saison), and add some tropical citrus notes that are outstanding, especially the tangerine flavor.

The feel is dry and crisp as a saison should be, but a bit softer with the hop additions. Just a really well-executed saison by Transient, IMHO.

Had on tap at The Beer Temple. Very refreshing.. While I prefer tasting saisons with food, none was present. That does not distract from Obelus being an accomplished ale. Looks hazy and alive. Smells mostly fruity, but a brett is in the background. Tastes are the same, well integrated. Soft in the mouth and finishes semi-dry.

My first from Transient, I went on their website to write a brewer review. But not much information was forthcoming from a minimal website. Since Transient is humble in that way, it means they don't have to brag and, instead, let their ales do the talking. Obelus Galaxy does. It is a worldly ale; brewed in a seasonally provincial western Michigan (when the tourists are gone.) Nonetheless, I hope to have another of their saisons.

Brewed August 2014. Great to see an Illinois brewery representing the tart saison area which seems to be lacking in our state.

A: Cloudy golden yellow with a white head that lingers
S: Tart, sweet peach, apricot, earthy Brett, grapefruit, light oak, vinous
T: Very tart, passion fruit, earthy Brett, vinous, peach, sour lemon, tropical, pineapple
M: Light and fluffy, prickly carbonation
O: Transient is phenomenal! This thing has gotten so nice and tart with age. Wish I still had another Oaked Obelus

This one pours a hazy, almost opaque golden orange, with a one inch head, and a ton of lacing.

This smells real fine, a good amount of juicy Galaxy hops, some funk, hay, and farmhouse citrus. Smells like what I'd expect from a Hill Farmstead saison, which is a really good nice.

This is delicious. A bit of funky hay, some chalky fruity brett flavors, some passionfruit, orange, and pineapple probably from the Galaxy hops, and a slight tartness, probably a 2/10 on the tart scale. It's super drinkable, and goes down really easy.

This is quite refreshing, with a light and airy body, with a moderate to high level of carbonation.

First beer from this tiny brewery, and I'm very impressed. Well crafted beer here.
