Conshohocken Brewing Co. "Jonesy"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED 12/20/23" and sampled on 04/04/24
$4.25 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: I don't know who this Jonesy is, other than seeing him on "What's Brewing PA", but that doesn't matter. This also supports charity so there's that. It's poured a hazy deep golden body beneath a beautiful head of fluffy white foam. The aroma is clean and suggests apples and caramel. The taste follows and in all honesty this is not what I was expecting. This is an old school lager that's got some sweetish, malty, and caramelish notes along with some minor apple and earthy, leafy, spicy, and tea-like hop notes. I like it. It's fully flavored, which I wouldn't have been suspecting if I was initially expecting an old school lager. It's unique, and I can't figure out what they've used to make it. Is there some honey malt in there? There's also an unusual woody note that reminds me of old cedar; I have no idea where that's coming from but I think it's hops. Whatever's going on it's at least interesting. There's enough bitterness to balance it and it lingers shortly with notes of wet wood and light apple. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp, basically very standard but also a little bit fuller than you might expect. The head retention and lacing were both good to very good but not great. This is a bit of an oddball, and I love that about it, but at the same time there's something a little bit off in the malt and hop combination that skews it for me. It's not a love and hate at the same time beer for me, but more of a like and ehhh, I'll call you later beer.
