Thanks for passing one along, Mark! This Hailstorm saison pours bright golden with haze running throughout that diffuses the light and adds to the glow. The vibrant white, soapy head grows easily to three fingers on the pour and shows some good staying power. Patchy lace clings to the glass. Carbonation rushes in streams to keep the foam in place as long as possible.
The nose is bright and vibrant. A squeeze of lemon juice and a dusting of peel sit atop a very grain-y base. There are a lot of grains used in this beer and it's certainly noticeable. Fresh husked barley straight from the field, a little wheaty twang, and a touch of spicy rye are most notable in that order of intensity. I like the grain complexity, it's unusual. There's also a dash of coriander seed and even cilantro that adds more brightness. A quick flash of alcohol wraps it up. Nice.
A quick flash of your typical saison orchards fruits start it off before the bright lemon aspect kicks in. The malt base is the most complex and interesting component of this beer. It's super grain-y from start to finish. The barley is most noticeable, fresh from the field, with wheat popping up in the middle, and the rye easily lingering on the swallow. The hop profile brings a welcomed grassiness from the middle to end. Nicely done.
The body weighs in at moderate, perhaps a touch below, but the active carbonation keeps it moving. Hailstorm did a good job at dialing in the bubbles. They awaken the tongue and create that airy feel I like so much. The finish dries up nicely while accentuating the spiciness of the rye and the bitterness of the hop profile.
Saison Melee is a good beer from the folks at Hailstorm. I wouldn't necessarily call it a world class saison but it's one hell of a refreshing, interesting, easy drinker. I'd buy this in the summer months to put away by the grill. It's highly approachable and easy to put away. Good job, guys!
