Little bit of a beer statistic milestone for this review: this is the 650th different brewery that I have drank a beer from.
22oz bomber bottle; sealed by purple wax with large gold flecks of glitter. Vintage 2019
Appearance: dark brown / light black body. Thick cap of off white colored head. Head is composed of tons of tiny little bubble and has a creamy symmetrical top. Light spotty lacing on the side of the glass.
Smell: Hint of vanilla pudding and a hint of whiskey. Some cola notes as well. Nose is a little weak. Will come back to this as the beer warms up to room temperature.
Taste: Mellow whiskey barrel is leading the way. Hints of vanilla and cola. Woody / oaky aftertaste with more mellow whiskey flavors.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied beer. low end of medium carbonation. This beer feels thinner than most barrel aged beers, even for a barrel aged porter. Not any harshness from the booze. It drinks to its 9.5% abv that is listed on the bottle label.
Overall: First time tasting a beer from Zumbier. This is solid barrel aged beer that just misses the wow factor. Mostly whiskey barrel flavors and was hoping for a lot more vanilla character. Its somewhere between solid and middle of the road. Certainly not a drain pour, but I did want something more from this beer.

On draft at the brewery, two subsequent bottles. 2020 bottle:
Black in the glass, thin layer of tan foam. Aroma of dates and raisins, molasses, oak barrel. Flavors of oak, raisin toast, molasses, smooth roastiness, mild vanilla sweetness. Plenty of barrel character and bourbon flavor, but the booze is well in check. Medium bodied with smooth carb, a light whiskey bite. Easy drinking, dangerously so. It’s a porter, not an imperial stout, so that’s to be expected.

The latest version is 9.5% ABV. This is a fabulously complex, tantalizing ale...more like a BA barleywine. All around drinkable and a treat. I actually had to pick up some bottles for home.
ZumBier is truly a hidden gem in Waukegan, IL...great staff and customers.
