Another Summer 2018 beer from this brewery. For whatever reason, it seems Reno breweries like to make ipas with obscure hops. This one has Zythos.

Pours a cloudy dark gold to light amber. 1/3" white head. The aroma hit the fruit additions, Capri Sun mango and pineapple. Sure you could just use aroma hops, but Zythos and fruit puree is probably cheaper. I guess this also has Eukanot.

Taste is ok, they didn't overdo the fruit, so its not that bad of a fruited ipa, in fact, it is enjoyable. I didn't get much in the way of a hazy ipa here, seemed like the appearance was murked out because of the fruit, not because I actually detected flaked oats or wheat. The bitterness was still in the run of the mill ipa range, about 50 ibu despite the noticeable sweetness from the fruit juice. This largely comes off as an ipa for people who don't like ipas or beer that tastes like beer. But they went for a middle ground, its not completely saturated in fruit juice. Oily sweet finish.

Thanks, Chad!

Was grateful for pulling in this, along with 16 others, from Chad and Bill on a recent work trip to Reno, Nev. Had given Swing Shift a 3.88 a few weeks ago, but I think that was only one I had from them (excluding the Oktoberfest that I drank by accident, thinking it was a La Cumbre Elevated IPA). Can description read, “New England style IPA brewed with Zythos and Ekuanot hops. With 400 pounds of mangos and pineapple added during fermentation, this beer is a tropical storm of flavor.” Not sure I’d ever hard Zythos before, but have generally enjoyed Ekuanot in my beers.

Poured a medium yellow hazy color with one fingers of fizzy off-white head. Could see some slow moving bubbles creeping up along the sides of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled mango, pineapple, papaya, lime, lemon, herbal, green pepper, grapefruit, tangerine and guava. From the can was more mango, guava and pineapple. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste was not quite as good as the nose, but still a tropical juice bomb. Got big notes of mango, guava, pineapple, papaya, lime, grapefruit, herbal, green pepper, peach, stone fruit and piney spice. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily-to-thin texture. Soft carbonation. Long, juicy finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was a nice New England Style beer overall. Very juicy. (Overall - 3.75)
