750 mL unlabelled bottle picked up fresh from the brewery on release day; served well-chilled. Strawberry beers have been a rare find for me, with this possibly being only the second example I've ever bothered to try. Giddy up!
This strawberry pale wheat ale pours an opaque golden-blonde with a brownish tinge, topped with one finger of relatively short-lived white head. Once it has wilted, a soapy film and thin collar remain behind. The aroma is somewhat subdued, including notes of strawberry pastry, wheat malt sweetness and some sour cherry.
A fairly straightforward wheat ale, dominated by wheat malt sweetness with a touch of strawberry, banana and apricot flavour. Mildly tart finish that fades from the palate quickly. This is a medium-bodied beer, with the viscosity/chew I would expect from a hefeweizen - I am actually a pretty big fan of the mouthfeel. Very smooth, with light carbonation that gently prickles the palate. Enjoyable, and the fruit flavour is not overbearing, which is one of the most important features of fruit beers as far as my tastes are concerned.
Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. Hipster Doofus is Refined Fool's second stab at brewing a sessionable wheat beer, and I'd be lying if I said I liked this one more than the occasional Mackinaw peach, or cigar, or café latte. While nothing about this brew is really wowing me, there's no denying that this is an approachable, highly quaffable wheat ale. Balanced, with a luxurious mouthfeel and nice twist of strawberry flavour - well worth a try if you're in town.
