750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery yesterday, rocking the colours of the Polish flag. Never had a grodziskie/grätzer previously, so this one was of immediate interest to me. Served slightly chilled.

An aggressive pour reveals this grodziskie to be pale straw-yellow in colour, with a foggy complexion. Roughly one cm of bone-white head is initially seated on top, but it fizzles away quite rapidly over the next 30-60 seconds or so, leaving the surface totally bare. Looks like a glass of flat lager to me, and it more or less smells like smoked pork off the bottle. From the glass, the smoke is noticeably less concentrated, allowing the aroma to take on more of a ham-like character, with some wheaty malt sweetness and a vague notion of grassiness.

I am actually mildly impressed with this one - it's a unique, light-drinking lager that comes together more smoothly than most of the domestic-made smoked/rauchbiers I've had. Neutral, grainy wheat sweetness provides the background flavour, with the oak-smoked malt giving the profile a restrained 'smoked pork meat' vibe. There's a bit of weak sourness with each gulp, but the profile ends on a mixture of grassy Saaz hoppiness and (still-fading) smoked malt flavours. Light-bodied and a bit watery, but at 3% I'd consider it to be a small miracle if this beer weren't a bit thin. The carbonation is rather weak, but this unusual beer somehow still manages to be refreshing. Extraordinarily easy to knock back.

Final Grade: 3.49, a B-. The last time the Refined Fools released a beer brewed with smoked malts, I was not enamoured with the final product. Chester's Revenge, however, is a much more successful attempt - and even though I have no real experience with this obscure Polish style, I will definitely keep my eyelids peeled for more grodziskies in the future, as it represents one of the most agreeable types of 'smoked beer' I've tried to date. Very much a niche product that risks turning off the uninitiated, but still worth a glass if you're curious.
