750 mL bottle fresh from the brewery; served slightly chilled. This is billed as a blonde ale brewed with saskatoonberries, and it is one of four beers that have recently been released to celebrate the brewmaster's marriage (along with a pale ale, a bock and a spiced stout).
Pours a hazy strawberry-blonde hue, capped off with one finger of frothy, off-white-tinged foam at the surface. It fizzles away over the next minute or two, soon settling into a modest-sized collar and thin cap. Relatively neutral on the nose; bready malts and grain hulls, with a bit of a musty, earthy hay note to it, and a few light suggestions of fruity blueberry off in the background. Clean aroma, but still on the dull side.
This is a nice, simple blonde ale with a pleasant hint of berry fruitiness. The backbone features some grainy, doughy malt sweetness with muted notes of caramelized sugar, with mildly tart notes reminiscent of blue- and raspberry flesh overlying much of the profile. The back end is comprised of grassy, leafy hop bitterness and berry skin astringency, each of which are gradually overtaken by a blend of grainy sweetness and mild berry flavour. Light-bodied, but neither thin nor watery; the carbonation is borderline assertive, with bubbles constantly prickling the palate, and resulting in a crisp, lively mouth presence. This would be preferable as a summer beer, but I suppose I'll settle for early autumn.
Final Grade: 3.52, a passable B grade. I don't have particularly strong feelings about this brew one way or the other. Groom's Last Blonde is an acceptable blonde ale, but one that fails to substantially impress me. The saskatoonberries come off kind of subdued - more of a background presence - and the base blonde itself, while clean and approachable, is not anything to write home about. Don't get me wrong - it's refreshing and enjoyable - it's just not a stand-out.
