750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery not too long ago; served slightly chilled. Billed as a "saison d'hiver" brewed with cinnamon and vanilla.
Pours a murky cherry cola colour - sort of reddish-bronze, with one finger of light tan-coloured head seated atop. It dissipates continuously for the next 90 seconds, producing a decent-sized frothy collar, but little in the way of lace. Caramelized sugar, prune and date on the nose, with a good punch of vanilla amidst suggestions of cinnamon and nutmeg. Maybe a touch of clove spice, with an overall yeasty, fruity feel to the aroma.
Tastes kind of like a strong Belgian-style dark ale, which is basically in line with what I was smelling (as opposed to a farmhouse ale). Fruity esters of raisin, plum and date seem to dominate, with caramel also coming on strongly. It becomes more herbal and spicy on the back end - first the vanilla, then booze and licorice, followed by a finish with earthy cinnamon and yeasty clove. Lingering fruity sweetness throughout the boozy aftertaste - at 9.7% its warmth is considerable. Medium-full in body, with light carbonation levels and a soft, silky, almost creamy mouthfeel. It's not bad, but in all honesty finishing the entire bottle myself will be a bit of a slog.
Final Grade: 3.51, a B grade. As the name would seem to suggest, Après Jambon is really best suited as a holiday dinner digestif. The high alcohol content is not particularly well masked, and along with the generous spice inclusion - and the sweet malty lean of the flavour profile - it's clear that this is a bottle that was meant to be shared. None of those are faults of the beer, which I feel is a fairly decent strong, spiced Belgian ale. That being said, I think I preferred Danglespanked, but this one was worth a tipple, too.
