Neck-tagged bomber from the brewery, served slightly chilled. Described as a "cherry hefeweizen".
Pours a cloudy, effervescent golden-amber colour, capped with one inch of white froth that fizzles and sizzles itself into non-existence over the next minute. A wide, frothy collar is the only remnant when all is said and done. The aroma draws you in with its wholesome, wheaty goodness - some bready malts and grainy husk come through, as do notes of banana, cherry and just a hint of clove spiciness. Yeasty, fruity aroma that is highly coercive (in that it easily tempts me into sipping it).
A very nice wheat beer; the cherry is more of a background presence than a central pivot. Bready, doughy wheat malt sweetness, with grain husk and banana esters. The cherry provides a nice, lightly tart berry-fruitiness that serves well as a supporting role. Mild clove spiciness and slightly chalky yeast notes on the back end, leading into a fruity, yeasty aftertaste that lingers on the palate briefly before fading. Light in body, with moderate carbonation levels that offer up a decent bite; a little watery, which is my only real critique of this otherwise-excellent, highly drinkable hefe.
Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. Captain Velour is far from the first fruit-infused wheat beer that Refined Fool has put out, but it's proof positive that they are getting better and better at producing them. The cherry is merely complementary - the base hefeweizen itself is what allows this beer to stand on its own. Marginally better than their cranberry hefe, I'd say. It doesn't quite mimic the look and mouthfeel of the German imports, but it still tastes great and is thus an admirable and competent effort that I would recommend to anyone visiting the brewery in the near future.
