473 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-amber colour, producing nearly two fingers of lusciously thick, creamy white head that steadily collapses. Five minutes later, I'm left with a frothy collar surrounding a thin cap; decent lace deposition after the first sip or two. Overripe banana dominates the nose, though there are also notes of bready malts, wheat, clove and pancakes.
For a North American hefe, this is pretty decent. Bready, wheaty malt sweetness is a major contributor, with ripe banana esters also figuring in strongly; banana bread and clove spiciness come through by mid-sip. The spiciness becomes more prominent at the finish, with banana pancakes and clove lasting into a persistent aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with assertive carbonation that bounces vigorously off the palate. Good drinkability, but nothing unusual for the style.
Final Grade: 3.76, managing to pull a B+. Refined Fool has tried its hand at brewing a true German hefeweizen several times in the past, with mixed results. However, I think A Serious Hosta Situation is their most successful attempt to date: it's a little too sweet & banana-heavy for my preferences, but other than that, I cannot find much to complain about. As is generally the case with domestic hefes, this is still not as good as most of the German equivalents, but I might take it over Erdinger.
