473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 27 2020 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a turbid pale goldenrod colour, briefly boasting a crown of puffy, foamy white head more than an inch thick. Within several minutes, it has been reduced to a tight collar surrounding a filmy cap; lots of webbed lacing, too, making this more attractive than the majority of goses I've tried over the years. Gritty pale wheat and lemon-lime citrus rind are prominent on the nose, coming through alongside hints of brine, margarita and yogurt.
A tasty brew that largely comes off like a very light margarita. Lime juice, grainy pale malts and agave/tequila flavours are situated at the front end of the sip, with the saltiness building thereafter; it's akin to a real margarita towards the finish and into the aftertaste, without the alcohol sting of course, but with a lingering lemony-lacto sourness instead. Light-ish in body; a bit flabby for a gose, but the crisp carbonation levels provide a good bite to the mouthfeel, nicely accentuating the saltiness. This is not a style I tend to consume en masse, but drinking a few of these in a row would be no problem.
Final Grade: 4.14, an excellent A-. Side Launch's Margarita Gose is not their most orthodox offering, but it does deliver pretty much what it advertises - a beer-ified margarita, with the agave nectar serving as a (much less boozy) substitute for the tequila. I liked it quite a lot, but I also enjoy margaritas now and then so your mileage may vary accordingly. This is a neat offering with good crossover appeal, one which could sell quite well this summer given the right push.
