473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 28 2020. Listed at 4.4% and served slightly chilled.

Pours a translucent, hazy lemon drop yellow, producing half a finger of frothy white head that vanishes within a minute. Not much of interest is left behind - a thin collar and a few wisps on the surface, with no sign of lace. Lots of citrusy lemon-lime on the nose, and the ginger also comes through pretty clearly; hints of grainy, wheaty pale malts are considerably less easily discerned.

A basic lime lager backbone appended with a spicy kick - I'm tasting lime juice right off the bat, backed by notes of grainy, crackery, wheaty malts and ginger root. The spiciness of the latter builds towards the finish, with ginger heat lasting well into the aftertaste, something that I like out of a ginger beer. Light-ish in body, with assertive carbonation and a prickly, slightly frothy texture that feels very crisp in the mouth. Like any ginger beer, I probably wouldn't want to drink this all night, but it's quite refreshing and makes for a nice change of pace.

Final Grade: 3.70, a B grade. If you like ginger beer then Side Launch's Mule Lager is worth seeking out and trying. My favourite element was the spicy ginger heat in the aftertaste, though the lime acidity does serve as a necessary counterpoint. Leans a little more towards a spiced (ginger) beer vs. a typical lager, so do keep that in mind if you're deciding whether or not to pick this up. I'd return if I were in the mood for a lime/ginger beer, but probably not on a regular basis.

I usually quite enjoy Side Launch beers, but this one is a bust for me.

Slightly cloudy pale gold. No head or lace or any other of that kind of trim. Best feature is the aroma of ginger. Very aggressive in character after that. Fierce ginger flavour with noticeable lime in the finish. Drinks like a Caribbean style ginger beer, very spicy. Unpleasant after bite. Not real beery.

Not to my taste. My wife says, "Blech!".
