In the age of palate ripping IPA's, thiccy gnar dessert stouts and quadruple fruited kettle sours (yes, we are guilty on all counts), sometimes you just need a beer. Preferably one that's low in alcohol with some flavor. Enter Moderation Dave, a malt-forward California interpretation of a Mild Ale, featuring a malt base of Admiral Maiden Voyage & Pacific Victor. Hopped just enough for exquisite balance and drinkability.

Well its not every day I review a mild ale, but this one was an enjoyable beer to sip despite its session like dimensions.
Pours dark into an old school Michelob glass. I'd say its about the darkest brown you can come up with without venturing into black SRM territory. I only got a thin beige head out of it, 1/5". Despite the hefty dark color, this wasn't a big massive roasted malt nose, more in the line of fall season, nutty, leaves, caramel, toffee, light roast to it.
Taste imparted the same autumn like impressions as the nose. Hints of coffee and toffee abound but never oppressive or massive, its not all commercial tug job, the Admiral Maltings here really do stand out. Hop presence isn't this beer's jam, just enough to make it work better and more beer like. Mouth feel was so much lighter than the appearance, might have been slightly more carbonated than I expected, but totally non problematic.
This was a welcome change of pace. When I pack the cooler full of a variety of beer, a can of this could always have a place year round. Unique and welcome.

Can poured into an Alvarado Street Brewery glass
A: Pours rich mahogany brown with a frothy khaki head that settles to a light layer and
S: Roasty, toasty, light fruity notes, a bit floral, earthy, and dark sugar sweetness.
T: Roasty, toasty, coffee, slightly nutty, earthy, a little of dark fruit, plum and cherry, light floral and herbal notes, and a touch of dark sugar.
M: Light to medium body, moderate carbonation.
O: Not a style you see that often, but one I rather enjoy. Great session beer.
