When we decided to bring some So Cal love with us up to San Francisco Beer Week this year, teaming up with Societe Brewing Company in San Diego was a no brainer. We settled on brewing up a BIG Pale Ale, and in the process stretched the style so far beyond its limits that we decided to call it something else entirely. We present a San Diego Style Pale Ale. It is light bodied, crisp and drinkable- but assertively hop forward at the same time. We loaded it up with Simcoe, Centennial and Idaho 7 hops and were rewarded with a cloud of pink grapefruit, bitter orange, pine, and fresh herbs that lingers above the glass. In the sip, supporting notes of berries, melon and citrus hold on into the clean finish that just disappears on you, and pulls you back in for more.

Can poured into an Alvarado Street Brewery Willi Beecher glass
A: Pours golden yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces nicely.
S: Dank, herbal, resinous, grassy, spicy pine, diesel, melon, blackberry, citrus, a touch of tropical and stone fruit, faintly toasty biscuity malt, and just a touch of sweetness.
T: Resinous, dank earthy herbal notes, diesel, spicy pine, citrus, tangerine, lemon, and grapefruit, a little tropical and stone fruit, apricot, passion fruit, and blackberry, plus hints of papaya and melon, a bit grassy, faintly toasty biscuity malt, and just a touch of sweetness.
M: A little on the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation.
O: Really testing the limits of what a "pale ale" is with a nearly 8% ABV, but it's got a pretty sturdy malt backbone. Drinks more like a West Coast DIPA but I guess nobody gets hurt if we just call it a West Coast Imperial Pale Ale. Properly San Diego dank up front with some nice depth of flavor following behind it. I'm sure people who are more into that dank side will really enjoy it.
