A brown, beer-flavored beer. No outlandish hopping rates or techniques. No assertive bitterness. No thick pillowy body or crazy expressive yeast. Just a base of heirloom English Maris Otter malt and a handful of carefully selected premium specialty grains were employed in crafting this satisfying, remarkably drinkable, downright delicious brown liquid. Dwell on the subtle and intricately balanced notes of bread crust, cacao, espresso, dark cherry, and plum. Or, just drink it. You know, that is what we made it for.

Can poured into an Alvarado Street Brewery Willi Beecher glass
A: Pours chestnut brown with a frothy khaki head that settles to a light layer and laces nicely.
S: Toasty nutty notes jump right out, followed by faint roast, coffee, and cocoa, subtle herbal tones, faint dark fruit, and a touch of toffee and burnt sugar sweetness.
T: Toasty, nutty, cocoa, a touch earthy, smooth coffee, a little dark fruit, cherry and Pluot/golden plum, faint herbal tones, a hint of vanilla, and just enough toffee and burnt sugar sweetness to round it out.
M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy.
O: Brown ales are near and dear to my heart and this one is an excellent example. It's a shame that they aren't more popular, but I'll happily take this one when I can get it. It's fantastic straight up and exactly what they were aiming for; a well made beer that doesn't need any fancy bells and whistles. That being said, I'd love to see them do some variants of this, even if it's just a special case in their taproom.
