This is basically a variation of a pumpkin ale using squash and sweet potato. And that means spice, which tends to dominate these types of brews. This one is not so heavy handed with the spice which makes it a bit more drinkable. Still quite sweet and malty. Not a lot of dimension to it, though, pretty much a one or two note play. Looks decent enough. Like murky coffee until it catches some light and shows off some red. Decent enough head settling to a ring, some early lace.

500 mL bottle from the brewery; best before Jan 23 2016. Brewed with "harvest spices", sweet potato and squash. It's a bit past its purported prime, but hopefully the fact that it has been kept refrigerated continuously will make up the difference.

Pours a clear reddish-amber colour, chock-full of not only bubbly effervescence, but also little flecks of what (I can only assume) are either squash or sweet potato. It's capped off with a modest-sized, half-cm layer of creamy-looking, bone white-coloured head that gradually subsides over the next five minutes. Some scattered swaths of lace; looks like your average pumpkin ale, and the spicy aroma immediately reinforces this notion. Nuances of nutmeg, vanilla and allspice underlie a pleasant brown sugar sweetness, along with some subdued notes of vegetal gourd and pastry crust.

Very comparable to a pumpkin ale, but with some slight tweaking on that theme. The malts have a bready, slightly toasty/biscuity flavour to them, along with a good dose of toffee sweetness. Vegetal squash/sweet potato character is only a minor presence, with some dirty, leafy hops at the finish that are quickly outshone by the spice additions. The label doesn't list the spices used to produce this beer, but I am getting vibes of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice on the back end. Finishes with a lingering earthy, vaguely herbal bitterness and a bit of a peppery bite. Relatively assertive carbonation, with medium-light body and decent weight in the mouth. Too spicy to be something I'd want multiples of, but it would pair nicely with holiday desserts.

Final Grade: 3.61, a B. Royal City's Autumn Ale sounded a lot more interesting than it actually turned out to be. The pumpkin spices are a little overdone for my tastes - mostly obscuring the subtle-to-begin-with flavours of squash & sweet potato. However, the sturdy backing of the malt bill saves the day, making this into a decent spiced amber ale that I can begin to appreciate. I'm sure I'll pick up a bottle from next autumn's release, but I'll need to remember to try it fresh.
