32 oz. screw-top bottle picked up at the brewery last weekend; bottled on Dec 5 2015 and served at fridge temperature. Brewed with cranberries and sage; consumed last night while watching 'Jingle All the Way' and compiled from notes.
Pours cloudy orange-amber in colour, with one centimetre of foamy, short-lived white head situated atop. It's mostly gone by the two-minute mark; in its place remains a thin, frothy collar along with minimal lacing. Smells of berries - mostly cranberry, with hints of cherry and apricot. Rather floral, grassy and herbal thanks to the sage, with some ethereal doughy malt sweetness hiding in the background.
More doughy malts and slight caramelized sugar sweetness on the backbone, but they merely play a supporting role. Cranberry and leafy, floral, herbal tisane/sage flavours are the most noticeable flavours, with the latter ones lingering well into the finish. Cranberry skin astringency also shows up, making the aftertaste a rather bitter, dry affair. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a pretty crisp-feeling brew. Good drinkability, but nothing too remarkable.
Final Grade: 3.51, just eking out a B grade. D'Jingle Berry is a decent Christmas fruit beer. I'm not a huge fan of sage so it follows that I'm not a huge fan of this - it's kind of flowery and herbal, without enough going on in the malt bill or hop department to really distract me from that aspect. The cranberry flavour comes through nicely though, and the dry finish keeps me coming back for another sip. Not something I'd run around town desperately seeking out on Christmas Eve, but a passable glass-filler nonetheless.
