Appearance: Pours a completely hazy (~95%), pale, but bright yellow cream color with a strong white head. SRM of 6-7. (4.25)

Aroma: Moderate and dank, resinous, but also juicy aromas. There's orange, grapefruit, sweet pineapple, and tropical fruit. It's aromatic, but also resinous. Tropical fruit sweetness through the end.

Flavor: The flavor follows the nose with moderate flavors of orange, resin, and tropical fruit. Juicy. Finishes with a bitterness, but also a deep and resinous malt profile to allow it to lean juicy. The soft carbonation is somewhat drying and cleans the orange resin off the palate somewhat on the end.

Feel: The body is medium with a strong, but soft carbonation. Allows it to finish rather soft and smooth on the palate. The soft carbonation is somewhat drying.

Compared to Surly's Axe Man IPA 5/2/21: Pours more hazy and yellow. Stronger aromas of orange, grapefruit, pineapple. More orange citrus. Less tropical fruit and berry. Less bitterness, and finishes more smooth.

Compared to Surly's Impossible Objects IPA 6/27/21: Pours a lighter and hazier color. More orange citrus, apricot, and pine.

Overall: A pretty decent hazy IPA. The dry-hopping provides nice orange, lemon, pineapple juicy citrus. Some light pine notes too. Overall, finishes appropriately soft and hazy. Not overpowering, but also pretty "chill" I suppose. Nice body and ABV at 6.5% makes it go down quite easily. Good and drinkable for a summer hazy IPA. (Final Rating: 4.04)

16oz can. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with with a good-sized, white head of foam. It left some patches of lace on the glass. It smelled of grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple and toasted caramel. Sweet tropical fruit taste with toasted caramel and subtle pine.

Bought from Tavour. It has all the characteristics of a NEIPA. I've requested BA to change Chill State to an IPA-NE as the brewer intended it as a "hazy." UnTappd has over 1500 check-ins that agree this is a NEIPA.

Looks, Smells, Tastes and Feels all slightly better than the standard NEIPA. A well-integrated ale, Chill State serves as great refreshment after coming in from this warm autumn day. Even the hops lingering at the end do not linger too much as is typical of the NEIPA.

Maybe I've gone off-the-charts with OA Hugs for Chill State and Fair State, but let me describe why I rate them (4.75!) as if they are super-accomplished and prone to produce classics. There are many ways for a collection of artisans to band together and use the same facility to brew beer. Fair State is the only brewer that I'm aware of who has hit upon the method of forming a cooperative. In today's verbiage, this is crowd-funding; but in the 20th Century, particularly before WW2, it was a coop... particularly in Minnesota and Wisconsin when small farmers banded together to survive. Today, an individual consumer can join Fair State for $200 (I'm not ready yet, or live close enough) and invest with $500 if I wanted to own a share. This is a clever way to crowd-source and make it through Covid. Obviously, I hope they succeed.

Pours an opaque golden yellow color with a thick foamy head. Head retention is good. Lacing is very good. Nice, fresh, aromatic, juicy citrus aroma. Pineapple, tangerine and tropical melon. Nice, juicy, easy-drinking taste. Citrus and melon. Very mild bitterness at the end. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A shorter review on this one.

Solid across the board on this one. Excellent cloudy look. Strong citrus aromas and similar flavors. Juicy but not that sweet. Well balanced with decent bitterness and restraint on the booze. Well carbonated and drying at the finish. A quite worthy line straddling ipa.

Can. White head with lace. Hazy golden color.

A lighter hazy, but still flavorful and very drinkable. Soft, with some grassy hops. Tangerine, melon, and orange citrus. A bit creamy. Very enjoyable.
